Chapter

Twenty-Three

Saturday finally arrived and I couldn’t have been more ready for the weekend. I had messages to return as well as cash and cheques to bank. Had it only been a month since Mrs Chapman’s consultation? If I continued to be this busy, I wasn’t in any danger of defaulting on my mortgage. Unless, of course, I didn’t go to the bank.

I did that as soon as it opened, then spent the rest of the morning returning calls. I booked out another couple of weeks’ worth of appointments. It was a good feeling to see all those appointments in my diary. Some would likely cancel or just not turn up, but I had so many lined up that even if a third didn’t happen, it wouldn’t be a problem.

There had been no other calls about the secretarial services I had intended to offer. I should take down those signs the next time I went to the supermarket. I would feel terrible if someone rang about getting something typed up and I had to turn them away, but I didn’t have time for that now.

I didn’t realise it was well after noon until my stomach growled. Actually, it had been growling for a while, but I had been ignoring it with the thought of “just one more phone call”. I should stop and at least make myself a sandwich, if I even had any food. I needed to get to the supermarket today and I could take down those signs at the same time.

I found enough in the fridge for a salad sandwich. There was bread that was only a little stale, lettuce, a cucumber that didn’t look too shrivelled, half a tomato, and some cheese. Not a terribly substantial lunch, but it would do.

I tossed the salad ingredients on the counter and went back to the fridge for the butter. As I put my sandwich together, I couldn’t find the cucumber. Figuring I had left it in the fridge, I rummaged through the vegetable crisper, but it didn’t seem to be there. I turned back to the counter and there was the cucumber sitting right beside my half-made sandwich. I was too tired to even make a simple sandwich. Maybe I should take a break from answering messages this afternoon and spend some time relaxing.

I sliced the cucumber and reached for the tomato. It wasn’t there. I was certain it had been sitting right beside the cucumber a moment ago, but now it was under the lettuce. Then when I went to pick up the cheese, that too wasn’t where I had thought.

“You’re losing your mind, Dorothy,” I said to myself as I checked the fridge for the third time. Sure enough, when I turned back to the counter, the cheese was sitting right where I had expected it to be.

It wasn’t until Lissa giggled that I realised what was happening.

“Dorothy, I can move things now,” she said.

Her voice was as light as ever, but her words left me feeling a little chilled.
